Machine guard helps to hide untidy, shabby machine parts. Heavy ribs, unevenly bulged casting, mismatched machined surfaces, wires, hydraulic and coolant pipes; can be easily hidden behind the sheet metal of machine guard. On the other hand, projected cross slides, towering ATC or protruded motor of rotary table can easily be merged by providing curve to the machine guard. Though aesthetic is to be seeded in design and nurtured in the manufacturing stage, use of good quality- though expensive guard accessories like handles, door knobs, hinges, 3 point locks etc. enhance the appearance of the guard.

The Machine Guard helps in maintaining the shop floor clean as it restricts coolant and chips within the machine. In modern plants with painted floors and ISO /TQM norms, keeping a clean floor can be achieved if machines are provided with a good leak proof Guard. A clean and presentable shop creates a good impression of the company.

Another design consideration! Ergonomically designed machine guards, operator console, cable/pipe ducts helps to improve the productivity of the operator, by reducing operator’s stress or fatigue in operating the machine. Auto -opening front sliding door and console to the right of the door, or niche provided in the operator door for closer approach, are a few examples.

The guard protects the operator from the moving parts of the machine by the use of interlocks and this helps in the prevention of any untoward accident from occurring. Machine guard saves the operator from injuries due to exposure to chips, splashing coolant and accidently broken tool or job.

Machine operation and maintenance locations are studied while designing of the machine guard. A properly designed guard helps in educing the time required for regular maintenance and servicing of the machine.
